Now Thank We All Our God

Remember, thereโ€™s no testimony if thereโ€™s no test!

On a Thirty Years War rampant through Germany during 17th century, Martin Rinkart was ministering in the city of Eilenburg as a pastor. He was deprived at young and a son of coppersmith. With humble beginnings, he felt the calling of serving as Godโ€™s servant. Meanwhile, since Eilenburg was a walled-city, it became the dumpsite of refugees. This situation causes a lot more conflicts aside from the ongoing war. Famine and disease arouse due to massive number of people contained in the city.

Around eight hundred homes were shattered. Some of his fellow gospel-bearers cared the sick and dying, as the pastors themselves took ill, too. By this time, only Rinkart left to do the services. Burial services spiked to 40 or 50 each day as the death roll increases. Even his wife died there, also.

When the Swedes demanded an enormous ransom, Rinkart was the one who negotiated with the enemy.

Through the courage and faith in His Master, he was able to start the end of their long-period suffering.

The song โ€œNun danket alle Gottโ€ was composed by Martin Rinkart. It is a song of thanksgiving originally meant for a prayer before meals and was perfectly translated by Catherine Winkworth as โ€œNow Thank We All Our Godโ€.  It is said to be a song to commemorate the survivors of Eilenberg, knowing that there is no healing without thanksgiving.

Trials and tribulations produce patience. Wisdom produces joy in trials. That even in miseries we will be exceedingly glad and patient, knowing that our God is with us. It takes a moment for us to thank God, but it takes a joyful heart and a wise mind to thank Him during sufferings. As James wrote in verse 2 and 3 of chapter 1 in the book of James, count it all joy when you fall into various trials knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

1 Now thank we all our God

with heart and hands and voices,

who wondrous things has done,

in whom his world rejoices;

who from our mothers’ arms

has blessed us on our way

with countless gifts of love,

and still is ours today.

2 O may this bounteous God

through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts

and blessed peace to cheer us,

to keep us in his grace,

and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all ills

of this world in the next.

3 All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given,

the Son and Spirit blest,

who reign in highest heaven

the one eternal God,

whom heaven and earth adore;

for thus it was, is now,

and shall be evermore.
